An Act of Kindness

Our Town, 30 March 2000

This week—a true parable not unlike that of the Good Samaritan. A story worth remembering as told by the Belleville Daily Advocate and reprinted in April 22, 1904 Progress.

"O’Fallon never does anything by halves. The people of that thriving little place go on the theory that if a thing is worth doing at all, it is worth doing well and act accordingly. The people of that place are not only progressive, but they have not let their scramble after wealth warp their minds until they are forgetful of the feelings or necessities of others.

"About two months ago a man named E. W. Bradley had both feet cut off by a freight train on the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad. The poor fellow was practically penniless and had no relatives nearer than Kansas City. He had been in the employ of the Selles & Downs Circus and was returning with a friend, who had charge of a load of cattle on the train, when he met with the accident.

"It is said that the conductor who had charge of the train from which Bradley fell wanted him taken to the County Farm, but Dr. Varney of O’Fallon, who had been summoned, took things in his own hands and ordered the man taken to the Varney sanitarium in O’Fallon. This was not only a wise move but a humane move, for the man could not have lived to reach the County farm.

By carefully treating the man, the doctor was able to save his life. Last week a subscription paper was started among the business men and citizens of O’Fallon to raise enough money to buy a pair of artificial feet. After a few hours work the necessary amount was raised, and Saturday Bradley was taken to St. Louis and the new feet purchased. In addition to all this, the citizens of O’Fallon will send Bradley to Philadelphia, where he is to resume his old position as snare drummer with the Selles & Downs Circus.

Verily, Bradley will carry vivid impressions of O’Fallon all the days of his life.”
