    O'Fallon Businesses

Doris Johnson of the O'Fallon Historical Society spent several years compiling three scrapbooks that chronicle the history of businesses in O'Fallon. She conducted research in the archives of the local O'Fallon and Belleville newspapers, and supplemented this information with photographs and other articles.

Initially, we have excerpted pages from Book I to include online, and we will continue to add to this section over time. The original scrapbooks are located at the O'Fallon Historical Society Museum in downtown O'Fallon, and are also available through the O'Fallon Public Library. (See the Lewis and Clark Library System On-Line Catalog for details).

Doris writes in the introduction to History of O'Fallon Businesses, Book I:

"I was born and raised in O'Fallon and have been interested in O'Fallon history for a long time. I became a charter member of the O'Fallon Historical Society in May, 1988.

"The Town Lounge burned down in November, 1991, and the Moose building (formerly known as the Poser building) was torn down about the same time to make way for the new building for the E. J. Printing Company, so I decided that we should take pictures of the remaining businesses in O'Fallon.

"This is the first of three books that tell the story of the businesses of O'Fallon. The book is divided into streets. The starting point is State Street at Lincoln. This book [Book I] contains information on State Street, First Street, Second Street, Third Street, Fourth Street, Fifth Street, and Sixth Street.

"Book II contains information on Lincoln Avenue, Vine Street, Cherry Street, Oak Street, Walnut Street, Washington, East Highway 50, Southview Plaza, Springfield Court, and Willards.

"Book III contains information on businesses on West Highway 50, Hartman Lane, the Frontage Road, and Old Collinsville Road.

"The date at the beginning of each item is the date that the item appeared in the O'Fallon Progress. I have noted items that are from the Belleville News Democrat or the O'Fallon Journal. I have also used 'Note:' at the beginning of information that I was told, but that I didn't find in a paper."
