O'Fallon Progress Social Column August OCHS of Okawville is visiting his uncle, Ruldolph OCHS of Rock Springs. Mr. and Mrs. Henry SHAW of St. Louis visited relatives and friends here Sunday. Mr. and Mrs. Henry COOK of Lebanon visited relatives here Sunday afternoon. Dr. SCRUGGS visited in O'Fallon Sunday. He will locate soon to Dr. JOSEPH's late office. Will SCHMIDT took in the sights in St. Louis Sunday. Mr. and Mrs. A. E. LOEFFLER visited in St. Louis Sunday. John SCHWARZ of Galesburg visited here the past week. He returned home Tuesday evening. Attorney W. J. CLUCAS of Lebanon was in town yesterday on business. Henry DANIEL is a candidate for village clerk. Edward WIGGINS has been drawn as a petit juror from this township to serve in the circuit court the two weeks commencing Monday, April 11. Mr. Conrad ZITZMANN of Trenton visited his brother D. ZITZMANN here last Saturday. Mrs. O. A. DARROW and little daughter, Ollie, visited relatives in St. Louis last week. C. D. SCHAEFER was in St. Louis Monday on business. Master Gerald SMILEY accompanied his grandfather, S. G. SMILEY to Lincoln last week. J. T. HOLLIDAY was electioneering in Marion County last Sunday. Mr. and Mrs. A. C. JONES and daughter, Miss Carrie, attended the JEPSON and HARDING wedding in Lebanon Tuesday. Miss Annie SIMMONS visited Mrs. O. C. PHENINGHANSEN in Lebanon Tuesday. The case of Fred HOLDNER versus C. ZOLLER for alleged board bill was tried before a jury in Squire SIMMONS court Monday. The jury decided against the plaintiff. M. W. BORDERS appeared in behalf of the defense. Mrs. John ANSTEDT has applied for a divorce from her husband. T. R. MOULD returned from Springfield Friday where he took the examination for mine manager. He returned very jubilant over his success in gaining the coveted certificate. Mr. F. G. SCHAU was very agreeably surprised Friday evening by a number of his friends, the occasion being in honor of his 62nd birthday. Those present were: Mr. and Mrs. C. H. DARROW; Mr. and Mrs. John WAGENER; Rev. and Mrs. CUMMINS; Mr. and Mrs. F. SCHAU, Jr.; Mr. and Mrs. H. P. GIBBS; Mrs. MOULD; Mrs. DEISCHER; Mrs. BREWER; Mrs. THURSTON; Mrs. KEESE; Misses A. V. A very pleasant surprise took place at the home of Mrs. Lizzie AHRENS Wednesday afternoon in honor of her birthday. Those present were: Mesdames RUSSEL; KNOLTON; F. REEBLE; J. LAWRENCE; H. SCHAEFER; C. SMITH; C. AHRENS; A. YEAGER; Wm. FISCHER; L. FINK; Misses Flora AHRENS; Annie FISCHER; Eleanor REEBLE; Flora FINK; Masters Charley FISCHER; David LAWRENCE; Walter SCHAEFER; and Johnnie LAWRENCE. The village board met Monday evening with president LEHMANN in the chair and all members present except CARSON. Under the head of appointments of judges and clerks for the ensuing village election, James McGINLEY, Louis LANDWEHR and Gus BUDINA were appointed judges; and Henry DANIEL, John DAVISON and Al YAEGER, Sr. clerks. Mrs. C. PFEFFER and daughter, Mrs. AMBS of Lebanon, were guests of Mrs. Dr. BECHTOLD last Friday. Mrs. WIER of Birkner's is the guest of Mrs. L. BEAUMONT. Rev. R. H. CARR will preach at the M.E. Church next Sunday morning. Mr. and Mrs. CUMMINS went to St. Louis on Monday to hear Chaplain Chas. C. McCABE's famous lecture on "The Bright Side of Life in Libby Prison." A local lodge of Royal Neighbors was organized here last Thursday evening. Twenty of O'Fallon's most prominent ladies assembled at Odd-Fellows Hall where Mrs. Mary C. ADAMS, Deputy Supreme Oracle, proceeded to initiate them in the beautiful work of the order. The following officers were elected and installed: Past Oracle, Mrs. Wm. HOUSAM; Oracle, Mrs. Wm. H. LEHMANN; Vice Oracle, Mrs. A. E. LOEFLLER; Chancellor, Mrs. F. W. WADE; Marshal, Mrs. John SEDDON; Recorder, Miss Cora REIDELBERGER; Receiver, Mrs. H. P. GIBBS; Inner Sentinel, Miss Katy WEIL; Outer Sentinel, Miss Annie BEHRENS; Organist, Mrs. John DAVISON; Managers, Mrs. O. A. DARROW; Mrs. Wm. HOUSAM; Medical Examiners, Drs. BECHTOLD and VARNEY. Mr. August DRESSEL, living 2-1/2 miles northeast of Summerfield, met a very painful accident the first part of this week. The accident was the result of a serious runaway in which Mr. DRESSEL had one of his legs broken. (Note: Mr. DRESSEL died of his injuries two days later. See March 17, 1898 O'Fallon Progress social items.) The Fallon Dramatic Co. have organized into a permanent organization electing the following officers: president, William AHRENS; vice president, Rosa PFEIFFER; secretary, William LAWRENCE; treasurer, Joseph W. MACKIN. They expect to present a new play sometime in April. Cards are out announcing the marriage of John TAYLOR to Miss Lillie KIDD, both of Furman's. The ceremony will take place at the home of the bride on Wednesday evening, March 16th. Louis VOGT had the little finger of his right hand badly injured at Willard's by coming in contact with a buzz saw. He will be off work several days. Mrs. George ETHERINGTON and daughter, Miss Lillie, of O'Fallon, visited Misses Julia and Anna TAGGERT in Lebanon last week. A valuable estate in England, said to amount to 7 or 8 million dollars left by Wm. BIGGS, who was supposed to have been killed in the Black Hawk war, is about to be distributed to the heirs. The testimony is almost conclusive that the Wm. BIGGS, whose narrative we have been printing, is the identical Wm. BIGGS who afterwards returned to England, inherited a small fortune and accumulated millions. Mrs. ATKINSON and Whitfield SCOTT are heirs. MAGEE and wife took dinner with John PEACH Wednesday and called at several places as they returned home. W. W. DARROW, Juna DARROW and Lizzie MOORE were in Belleville Saturday on business. Henry EVANS and family spent Wednesday with Andy MOORE. Mrs. John PEACH, Mrs. A. MOORE and Aunt Louisa EHLEY visited W. A. DARROW's last week. Don PARKER was seen passing through our midst this week. About 8:30 Thursday evening, W. E. PEACH heard the sweet strains of music and, opening the door, he was greeted by a crowd from Oak Hill, which took possession of the house for four hours. The center of attraction for most of the evening was the tail-less donkey. Wilbur received first prize and Mr. SCHAEFER carried off the booby. Mrs. C. B. DARROW and daughter, Nellie, were shopping in Belleville Saturday. Mr. WALKER of Nashville visited Clay STEPHENS the first part of this week. Mr. A. MAGEE of Lebanon and Jack POWERS of Trenton have not returned for their dinner which they ordered. We are sorry to say that circumstances alter cases. Mr. A. J. BRIDGES and J. A. DARROW were in East St. Louis Tuesday on business. Mr. W. DARROW and wife called upon G. C. MAGEE Sunday afternoon.

Davy ROBERTS received a new bicycle Tuesday evening; he rides well for a new beginner. Mr. and Mrs. WHITEHEAD, Sr. have moved back from Bond County. They occupy the house that Mr. GOETZ vacated. They will tend the farm of the Consolidated Coal Co.
Miss Maggie MILLER visited her parents Mr. and Mrs. J. MILLER this week. Ingel's Prairie News A very pleasant quilting party was held at Mrs. Philip WEIL's last Wednesday. Mr. Adolph FIX of Summerfield has moved to Mr. LUETTINGER's farm. Miss Mary LURTZ spent last Sunday at home. Mrs. S. G. SMITH visited Mrs. J. W. ASBURY Sunday. Miss Lulu STONE and Elmer ASBURY attended the HOLDNER and ZOLLER trial Monday. Miss Josie SCHILDKNECHT was at home Sunday. Mrs. J. W. ASBURY has been very sick, but has recovered.
