O'Fallon Progress Social Column A very pleasant surprise party took place at the home of Mr. and Mrs. George BROCKHANN last Friday afternoon in honor of their daughter, Miss Betty's 9th birthday. Those present were: Lizzie CHAPPLE; Eleanor and Lillie DEISCHER; Katie BOWLER; Maude and Mary SCHILDKNECHT; Eleanor LAWRENCE; Ida, Minnie and Annie BROCKHANN; Martha TIEDEMANN; Daisy GIBBONS; Celia and Gusta PANNIER; Mary BEHRENS; Ella ZINKGRAF; Blanche and Clement SEITER; Lola THURSTON; Edith HOUSAM; Viola TIEDEMANN, Mellvina CROSSLEY; Louisa SIEBERT; Josie BROCKHANN; George BROCKHANN; August BEHRENS; Otto and Ludie FINK; Julian LEHMANN; George ALEXANDER; Alfred CROSLEY; Clarence MACE; Roy GARDINER; Charley THURSTON; Henry SIEBERT; and Edgar SCHALTER. Mrs. Charles TIEDEMANN has been quite sick the past week. Joseph LANDGRAF will reopen his saloon on the first of May. D. C. DUNN and George McCOMMONS were in St. Louis yesterday. Miss Cora DAVIS was in Lebanon Tuesday. The case of the people vs J. J. RUBENSTEIN and Harry LOWENTHAL for receiving and disposing of stolen property is set for hearing in the circuit court on Wednesday, May 4, 1898. David McFARLAND, living southwest of here, is suffering from a stroke of paralysis due to a fall from his wagon last Friday and his condition is considered critical. He was on his way home from the circus when his horses took fright and he was thrown on the ground in such a manner as to receive injury to his spine. A rather operatic serenade was brought to Frank J. MARTIN Tuesday night by the celebrated WILLARD Mandolin and Guitar Club. Charles PORTER of Salem, IL called on Dr. BECHTOLD Sunday. Robert LURTZ's children in Ingall's Prairie, who have been having scarlet fever are all convalescent. Measles are epidemic in Ridge Prairie west of here. Nearly every family in that vicinity being effected. Albert ALEXANDER has a very sick child. It is suffering with bronchitis. Mrs. Jennie LEMEN of Denver, CO and Mrs. M. STAFFORD of Decatur, IL are visiting their sister, Mrs. HOLLIDAY. Mrs. L. PHILLIPS and Miss Alice GOFF of East St. Louis spent Wednesday with Mr. and Mrs. T. MACKIN. A Mum Social was given last Friday evening at the home of Miss A.V. CARRIEL. The proceeds were donated to Mrs. Baker PHOENIX. Chester SMITH of Chicago visited his father and the old home place Friday. Ollie CALLAHAN of Belleville visited Saturday and Sunday. He is with Company D who left for Springfield yesterday. Albert F. NIEMEYER, the jeweler, is becoming quite well known in our vicinity and his workmanship is introducing itself. He is an excellent workman having served an apprenticeship of five years under William GILL, 616 Olive St., St. Louis, MO. For reference as to workmanship, see J. A. SCHALTER, agent. Married this afternoon, Miss Katie MEYER to Mr. Henry OWENS. The ceremony was performed by Rev. Father DRUBE at the parsonage. Albert F. NIEMEYER and a friend drove down from Lebanon last Thursday in a buggy. The marriage of John DUNLAP to Miss Emma TITUS, daughter of Sam TITUS who is well known here, was solemnized last Wednesday. Mr. James ADAIR and sisters, Misses Nellie and Maude, of East St. Louis visited friends here last Sunday. Harry ALEXANDER and family of Belleville visited friends here Sunday. Married - Mrs. August DRESSEL to Mr. Adam HAAS. James HOLIDAY who has been sick the past week or more is now convalescent. He was threatened with pneumonia. The night operator Mr. KUNKEL of the B. & O. S.W. visited in St. Louis last Friday and brought his two children home. Henry YUNGBLUTH, painter and paperhanger of Belleville, visited his aunt, Mrs. YUNGBLUTH and incidentally did some paper hanging for her. Born to Mr. and Mrs. James WETMORE on Monday a son.
John POWELL of Ridge Prairie, who has been quite sick for some time, is now convalescent. Oak Hill News Mr. and Mrs. John FINCHER were in St. Louis Sunday. Mr. Edgar PATTERSON did business in Belleville Saturday. Mr. and Mrs. J. W. MOORE, of East St. Louis, were the guests of Mr. and Mrs. A. MOORE Sunday. Mr. John REISS and brother were seen in our midst Tuesday. Miss Lizzie MOORE is on the road toward recovery. Mr. and Mrs. Clay STEPHENS entertained their St. Louis relatives Sunday. John ZEIZEL took his engine to the tin shop in Collinsville Monday to get it repaired. A nice little party took place at Mr. RUPRECHT's Sunday evening. Those present were: J. ZEIZEL; L. RECHNER; C. RECHNER; Charles BECKMANN; Joseph ANTON; E. PAUSCH; J. PAUSCH; E. RECHNER; Carrie ALBRICHT and Carl STARKEL. Mr. V. THOMAS and Lottie RUPRECHT took in the show Friday. E. T. RECHNER was seen talking to his best girl at Collinsville last Sunday.
